April – October is prime surf season, when consistent Indian Ocean swells roll in. June – August brings the biggest, most powerful waves and the most crowds — best for advanced surfers.

April – May and September – October offer smaller, friendlier swells with far fewer people in the lineup — ideal for intermediates or a quieter trip.

The dry season, roughly May to September, gives the clearest lake views and easiest road conditions for the Berastagi–Sipiso-piso loop.

Avoid: Peak monsoon (Dec–Feb) brings slippery mountain roads on the route to the waterfall.

Dry season (April – October) offers calm seas for the crossing and the best diving visibility. July – August is peak tourist season — book ahead.

The National Park is only open for trekking from April to December. Within that window, May, June, September, and October offer the best balance of clear views and lighter crowds. July – August is peak season with the clearest skies but the busiest trails and coldest nights at the summit.

Avoid: The park closes completely from January to March for monsoon safety and trail recovery.

Dry season (April – October) keeps the access road and hilltop trek comfortable and the pink sand at its most vivid in clear sunlight.

Best sailed April – December, during Komodo's dry season, for calm seas between islands. June – August has the clearest skies for the classic hilltop panorama, though boats get busier.

May – October keeps the multi-hour drive and rainforest trek to the village dry and manageable. Mornings are cool and often misty year-round — bring a light jacket regardless of season.

Avoid: Wet season (Nov–Mar) turns the trail muddy and slippery on steep sections.

May – October gives the clearest sunrise views over the three crater lakes. Aim for early morning arrival (crater gates open around 4–5 AM) — mist often rolls in by mid-morning even in dry season.

Pleasant almost year-round thanks to its highland elevation. April – October (dry season) is driest and most popular; the rice terraces are greenest right after the wet season, around March – April.

Dry season (April – October) gives the clearest sunsets over the clifftop temple. Visit late afternoon for the Kecak fire dance at golden hour.

April – October brings calmer seas for the boat crossing and clearer water at Kelingking, Angel's Billabong, and Crystal Bay. May – September is also prime manta ray season around Manta Point.

Dry season (April – October) gives clear, unobstructed sunrise views from Penanjakan viewpoint. July – August can bring the "cold spell" (bediding), with pre-dawn temperatures near freezing — pack warm layers regardless of month.

Dry season (April – October) is most comfortable for walking the open-air temple complexes. Sunrise visits at Borobudur (pre-booked, separate ticket) are best in the drier months for a clear view over the surrounding hills.

Dry season (April – October) keeps the trekking paths between villages dry and manageable, since no vehicles are allowed inside Baduy territory.

Avoid: Baduy Dalam observes an annual Kawalu retreat (roughly Jan–Mar, dates vary), when the inner villages close entirely to outside visitors.

June – September is both the dry season and traditional Rambu Solo funeral season, when families hold ceremonies after the harvest. July – August offers the highest chance of witnessing a funeral (respectfully, as an invited observer), but is also the busiest and priciest time to visit.

Prefer quieter scenic trekking without the crowds? Aim for the shoulder months, April – June or September – October.

Diveable year-round. Whale sharks are typically sighted mid-September to mid-June near Derawan itself; when strong winds arrive around June – September, sightings shift to the more sheltered Talisayan area, about 2 hours away.

Sea turtle nesting and hatching at Sangalaki Island happens year-round, with no strong seasonal peak.

October – March brings calmer seas for the ferry crossing and better diving visibility around the volcano. Flights and ferries run on limited weekly schedules year-round, so timing your trip around availability matters as much as the season.

October – April is the dry season, with calm seas, visibility often exceeding 30m, and manta rays gathering at Manta Sandy — December – March is peak manta activity.

Avoid: July – August brings the strongest winds of the year, when the southern islands (including Misool) become difficult or impossible to reach by boat.
